Meals on Wheels

We provide 150 meals per week, freshly cooked by our professional kitchen staff at The Nicky Alliance Centre. They are delivered twice weekly - each meal consisting of 3 courses.

We make sure we give our recipients a well balanced diet and special requirements are catered for. We now offer a more varied choice of meals, which we serve to our members for lunch at The Nicky Alliance Day Centre.

A typical Meals on Wheels recipient may be physically unable to prepare a meal due to general frailty or a specific physical disability. They may lack motivation to prepare or even eat meals because of either physical or mental health problems. Sometimes they have to be encouraged to continue our meals to ensure they get a reasonable standard of nutrition. On the other hand, some people may simply need meals to tide them over for a short period of ill health or after a stay in hospital.

For many carers our meals give them a brief break from their caring responsibilites. We often receive referrals for Meals on Wheels which come through the local authorities, The Manchester Jewish Federation, and hospitals discharging people. Also, we receive requests from individuals themselves, or concerned members of the family. If further assessment is necessary, we involve the expertise of our resident social worker.

We are very fortunate to have a rota of dedicated volunteer drivers who play an important role by going out in all weathers to deliver nutritious meals to members of the community. Our recipients look forward to seeing them at their homes each week, giving them an opportunity to have a friendly chat.
